What is Gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the digestive system which extends from the mouth to the anus (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum) and also includes liver, gall bladder, and pancreas.
Common symptoms of digestive diseases are abdominal pain, nauseaus feeling, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting blood, passing blood with stools, loss of weight, indigestion, bloatiness, heartburn, change in bowel habits, discoloration of urine or skin, and many others.
Some of the specific diagnosis or conditions gastroenterologists deal with are gastroesophageal reflux, Barrett's metaplasia, gastritis, peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, celiac sprue, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, pancreatitis, gallstones, polyps and cancer of the digestive organs.
The early detection and diagnosis of digestive diseases, their treatment and the prevention of complications are the main functions of a gastroenterologist.
The second killer cancer in the USA is colon and rectum cancer, two thirds of these deaths could be prevented through early detection of the disease. An important service provided by gastroenterologists is the screening for colorectal cancer by using laboratory tests, colonoscopy examinations, and imaging studies.
